‘The guy that buys stuff’ for Ripley’s to retire

The man who purchased everything from shrunken heads to Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber is ending his decades-long quest for oddities. Edward Meyer, vice president of archives and exhibits for Orlando-based Ripley Entertainment, is retiring.

For the past 33 years, “I’ve been the guy that buys the stuff — I use that word with a smile, a sense of humor,” he said.

“I buy history. I buy science. I buy geography. I buy art. I buy pop culture. … Unique … unbelievable … Hopefully you can’t see it anywhere. Otherwise, it’s anything. It’s stuff,” Meyer said.

He’s purchased enough of that stuff to fill dozens of Ripley’s Believe It or Not attractions — also referred to as “odd-itoriums” — and a 20,000-square-foot warehouse in Orlando.
